Our Approach

While chemical applications are effective at eliminating algal blooms and controlling unwanted plant growth, nutrient mitigation can help prevent the growth from occurring in the first place. Plants and algae use readily available nutrients in the water column to facilitate their growth, and areas like farmlands can be particular susceptible to excess nutrient input through runoff.

To help combat excess nutrients, particularly phosphorus and nitrogen, nutrient mitigation and bioaugmentation have proven effective. Nutrient mitigation involves the use of pesticide free products to aid in “deactivating” readily available nutrients, thus making them inaccessible to plants and algae. Bioaugmentation works in a similar manner, by introducing safe, beneficial bacteria into the water column to compete with plants and algae for these nutrients and limiting the availability for uptake.
